Original Text Explanation

孫子曰：昔之善戰者，先為不可勝，以侍敵之可勝。

Sun Zi says the strongest commanders first made defeat difficult, then waited for the enemy's opening.

不可勝在己，可勝在敵。

Protection from defeat comes from your own preparation; the chance to defeat comes from the enemy.

故善戰者，能為不可勝，不能使敵之必可勝。

A good fighter can make himself hard to beat, but cannot force the enemy to expose weakness on command.

故曰：勝可知，而不可為。

So you may understand what victory requires without being able to manufacture it whenever you want.

不可勝者，守也﹔可勝者，攻也。

Preventing defeat belongs to defense; exploiting an opening belongs to attack.

守則不足，攻則有餘。

When strength is not enough, you hold; when it overflows, you strike.

善守者，藏于九地之下﹔善攻者，動于九天之上。故能自保而全勝也。

見勝不過眾人之所知，非善之善者也﹔

It is not supreme skill to notice a win only when everyone else can already see it.

戰勝而天下曰善，非善之善者也。

Nor is it supreme skill simply to win after fighting and be praised for it.

故舉秋毫不為多力，見日月不為明目，聞雷霆不為聰耳。

Lifting a tiny thing is not proof of great strength; seeing the sun and moon is not proof of sharp sight; hearing thunder is not proof of keen hearing.

古之所謂善戰者，勝于易勝者也。

The truly skilled fighter wins where victory comes easily.

故善戰之勝也，無智名，無勇功。

That is why his victories do not make him look unusually brilliant or heroic.

故其戰勝不忒。不忒者，其所措必勝，勝已敗者也。

He wins because he makes no decisive error, and that means he confronts an enemy whose defeat has already been set up.

故善戰者，立于不敗之地，而不失敵之敗也。

善用兵者，修道而保法，故能為勝敗之政。

The best commander cultivates shared order and keeps firm discipline, and by that can govern the terms of success and failure.

兵法：一曰度，二曰量，三曰數，四曰稱，五曰勝。

In military method there is measurement, then estimation, then calculation, then weighing, and finally victory.

地生度，度生量，量生數，數生稱，稱生勝。

Terrain gives rise to measurement; measurement to estimation; estimation to calculation; calculation to comparison; and comparison to victory.

故勝兵若以鎰稱銖，敗兵若以銖稱鎰。

A winning army against a broken one is like heavy weight tipping the scale against almost nothing.

勝者之戰民也，若決積水于千仞之谿者，形也。
