孫子曰：凡治眾如治寡，分數是也﹔

Sun Zi says that governing many people rests on the same principle as governing few: proper division.

鬥眾如鬥寡，形名是也﹔

Directing a large force in combat follows the same rule as directing a small one: forms and signals.

三軍之眾，可使必受敵而無敗，奇正是也﹔

Making the whole army absorb an enemy attack without breaking depends on the interplay of orthodox and surprise.

兵之所加，如以碫投卵者，虛實是也。

Making your blow land like a millstone on an egg depends on knowing where strength meets weakness.

凡戰者，以正合，以奇勝。

故善出奇者，無窮如天地，不竭如江河。終而復始，日月是也。死而復生，四時是也。

奇正相生，如環之無端，孰能窮之？

Orthodox and surprise keep generating one another like a circle with no end. Who can use up all their possibilities?

激水之疾，至于漂石者，勢也﹔

A torrent that rushes hard enough to carry stones shows what momentum can do.

鷙鳥之疾，至于毀折者，節也。

A falcon that times its dive to break its prey shows what precise timing can do.

是故善戰者，其勢險，其節短。

That is why the skilled fighter builds fierce momentum and strikes in a short, exact moment.

勢如張弩，節如發機。

Momentum is like drawing a crossbow tight; timing is like releasing the trigger.

紛紛紜紜，鬥亂而不可亂也。渾渾沌沌，形圓而不可敗也。

Even amid turmoil and collision, there can be no true disorder; even amid confusion, the formation can remain unbeaten.

亂生于治，怯生于勇，弱生于強。

Apparent disorder grows from real order, apparent fear from courage, and apparent weakness from strength.

治亂，數也﹔勇怯，勢也﹔強弱，形也。

Order and disorder come down to organization; fear and boldness come down to momentum; weakness and strength come down to formation.

故善動敵者，形之，敵必從之﹔予之，敵必取之。

故善戰者，求之于勢，不責于人，故能擇人而任勢。

So the good fighter looks for advantage in the situation itself and does not demand everything from individual people. That is why he can choose the right men and let momentum carry them.

任勢者，其戰人也，如轉木石。木石之性，安則靜，危則動，方則止，圓則行。

When such momentum is properly used, the troops become like rolling logs or stones. Wood and stone rest when level, move when on a slope, stop if square, and roll if round.

故善戰人之勢，如轉圓石于千仞之山者，勢也。

The force created by good fighters is like a round stone hurtling down a mountain thousands of feet high.
